3rd Year Geography student, Amy Jefferies, reflects on the International Peer Program’s recent trip to a Canucks game.

As an exchange student from England, I had never seen an ice hockey game before I came to UBC. I thought ‘Canucks’ was just a slang term for Canadians and I had never heard of Ryan Kesler or Roberto Luongo. All I knew was that I had to see a proper Canadian hockey game – and the International Peer Program (IPP) gave me the chance. I bought Ticket #1 for $65 (very cheap for an NHL game) and counted down the days ’til the game.
I arrived at the International House dressed in an enormous Luongo jersey – to much approval! There was face painting and an excited atmosphere as we travelled to Rogers Arena. We sat right at the back of the arena, but had a truly awesome view. The game itself was very exciting. The Kings are notoriously challenging and there was a good fight at one point. By the third period the score was 2-2. With no goals during overtime the game went to a nailbiting shootout, which we unfortunately lost on the last shot.
Regardless of the final score, it was a brilliant and unforgettable Canadian night out. Thank you so much IPP!
